Dom’s Walking with the Wounded

In just 9 weeks time, Gould Managing Director, Dominic Blakey, is running a race that is not for the faint hearted! The Marathon Des Sables, or MdS, is ranked the toughest footrace on earth as its course runs through the Sahara desert in the 50 degree centigrade heat.

It sounds like a nightmare for some, but for others the thought of crossing the line after 156 miles*, over 7 days is exhilarating.

Dom is Making a Difference

On the 8th - 18th April 2016, Gould Publishing Papers Managing Director Dominic Blakey will take part in the epic race, running in the intense heat, over desert-mountains, through sand storms and over plains. All in aid of Walking with the Wounded.

It is a 256km ultra marathon which is equal to 6 marathons and it is run over 7 days across the Sahara in temperatures often as high as 50 degrees Centigrade. Each runner must be self sufficient and carry all that they need for the duration of the race on their, emergency equipment, sleeping bags and spare clothes.

Dom wants to make a difference to all veterans and their families, and he's aiming to raise a large sum to help out.

"I've committed to raising £25,000 and I have just a few months to go to the race. It's a big target but I'd like to raise even more if I can. Thanks to some incredibly generous sponsors, I have raised a shade over £16,000 for Walking with the Wounded already..... over half way to my target of £25,000!"

He does have some experience of the race under his belt, which may just give him an advantage in the gruelling race.

"I have done the event once before when I was in my 20's, so this is going to be interesting as that was in 1997! I was a lot younger and a lot fitter!

In an effort to increase my stamina....I have done a couple of 30 mile runs and a 90 mile 3 day Ultra along the Ridgeway...and I have entered 2 more Ultra marathons before the main event in April, including the Pilgrims Ultra on Sunday 7th February on the North Downs, which is 110km in total."

About Walking with the Wounded

Dom is raising money for Walking with the Wounded, an amazing charity working on behalf of some amazing people... our veteran servicemen injured mentally or physically in defense of our country.

Walking with the Wounded (WWTW) fund re-education and re-training for physically and mentally injured service men and women, who do not have the skills nor the confidence to start a different career path. WWTW work to restore their self-confidence and get them back into work so that they can continue to support themselves and their families.
