WORD/PHRASE DEFINITION
Absorbency The ability of paper or board to take up or retain aqueous solutions, printing inks and varnishes.
Absorbent Papers Duplicator, blotting and filter papers are the best known: matrix and towelling are other examples.
Acetate A cellulose sheet that is used as a film base or an overlay in artwork preparation.
Acid Free Is a paper that has a neutral pH (7 +), and is made from cellulose fibres where the acid content has been removed during processing. Also these papers are ideal for archival purposes.
Addendum Supplementary material additional to the main body of a book that is printed separately and inserted at the start or end of the text.
Adhesive Binding A threadless binding method, where the leaves are held together on the binding edge by glue, or a synthetic adhesive.
Air Dry (ADT) Refers to the weight of dry pulp/paper that is in equilibrium with the atmosphere.
Airbrush A mechanical painting tool producing an adjustable spray of paint or ink, used for illustration design or modification.
Anodised Plate An offset printing plate with a specially treated surface to reduce wear during printing.
Antique Is a quality bulky paper, particularly opaque, with a rough or toothy surface finish. It is usually available in white or colours, can be deckle edged, and either laid or wove. Its good printing surface is a feature of the grade which is often used for the more expensive books.
AOX Adsorbable Organic Halogens. Measurement of the amount of chlorine bound to organic substances
Art Paper Often the generic term given to woodfree coated papers, but historically referred to the Real Art papers at the top of the coated range. They have an extremely high gloss or polished surface, giving excellent ink hold out.
ASC11 American Standard Code for Information Interchange. This is a coding system within the computer industry to convert keyboard input into digital information.
ATFS Is the American Tree Farm System.
