Alice Hector is Running for Britain
This Friday I am racing for the British team in the World Sprint Triathlon Championships. It will be fast and furious and features a multi-lap course through closed roads in Hyde park.
I am in great shape considering I have only been back training intensively for a few months. Obviously there is a lot more to come but I am very content with the progress I've made in a relatively small space of time.
It will be fantastic to be part of this spectacle of sport; athletes from all over the World have descended upon London to take part in various multi sport events and distances which take place through the week.
Obviously, triathlon is an individual sport and each athlete is hoping for their own glory, but we are also hopeful that Team GB sew up as many medals as possible!
Looking to 2014
Having won the Scottish champs and beaten a few elite athletes this year, I am well on my way to launching myself onto the pro long distance scene next year.
This is where the 'glamour' lies (if you can possibly call a sport involving epic feats of endurance, along with the obligatory blood, sweat and tears, 'glamorous') with prize money, media exposure and crowds. Ironman distance events, where you swim for 3.8km before cycling 180km and THEN running a marathon, is what I'm best suited for.
This season has been about getting back into it, building a solid base of fitness, and basically learning to hurt! My race on Friday will take less than an hour. Next year, it'll be more like 10!
The World Champs is also my last race for 2013 (except a little ultramarathon I am doing in October!) and hopefully it's a chance to get onto the podium and finish off with a bang. Whatever happens, I have done enough already to know I have what it takes to race on the biggest stage of all next year: Ironman.
The Pru Health World Triathlon champs run from Weds 11th until Sun 15th Sep and is all contained within Hyde Park and central London. The course is very spectator friendly and all events are free to watch. For more details visit worldtrilondon.com
Alice races on Friday 13th (!) at 9.25 a.m.
